Family scoops council run book prize

Competition encourages parents to read with children

A WEST Berkshire family has read its way to a prize through a council-run contest.

Amanda Pitt and her family, from Beenham, won an Acer tablet computer for participating in West Berkshire Libraries’ adult reading challenge Grown-ups2!

West Berkshire librarians decided to create the competition to encourage parents to support their children with reading.

This year, 597 adults took part in Grown-ups2!, a 30-per-cent increase on the 455 that participated in 2015.

Miss Pitt and her family are regular library users who borrow from Theale and the mobile library.

West Berkshire’s councillor for culture, Dominic Boeck (Con, Aldermaston), said: “The Grown-ups2! competition is unique to West Berkshire and is an innovative and fun way to get parents involved in supporting their children to read.

“It’s becoming more successful each year and proves that reading is an enjoyable pastime at any age.”

Miss Pitt was presented with her prize by chairman of West Berkshire Council Quentin Webb, at Theale Library on Saturday.
