Newbury MP Laura Farris pleased with Government Pumpwatch proposals

Newbury MP Laura Farris has endorsed the Government’s Pumpwatch scheme announcement.

The scheme would mean fuel retailers will have to publicise changes to prices within 30 minutes.

This would allow motorists to shop around for the best fuel prices before filling up.

They would be able to do this via navigation apps, in-car devices and comparison websites.

A public consultation was launched on January 16 for consumers and retailers to share their views on the best way to implement the open data scheme.

Energy secretary Claire Coutinho said: “We are forcing retailers to share live information on their prices within 30 minutes of any change in price, helping drivers to find the best deal at the pump.

“This will put motorists back in the driving seat and bring much-needed competition back to the forecourts.”

Mrs Farris said: “I have been raising concerns for almost two years about high fuel prices in the Newbury area, in particular the fact that many neighbouring retailers are cheaper.

“It is vital that drivers have real-time price information to find the best deal at the pump.”

She added: “This is particularly important in West Berkshire given the issue of price differentials in surrounding areas, which I am continuing to report to the Competition & Market Authority (CMA).”

“I remain concerned that providers are taking advantage of Newbury’s relatively rural location and the high level of car use, although we have seen significant improvements in the last three months.

“I am pleased that the Government is taking tough action on unfair fuel prices by increasing transparency for motorists, and I encourage constituents to respond to the consultation.”
