Newbury MP Laura Farris quick to congratulate new Prime Minister Liz Truss
Newbury MP Laura Farris has offered her congratulations to the new Conservative party leader Liz Truss following her victory today (Monday) over Rishi Sunak.
Despite openly supporting Rishi Sunak’s #Ready4Rishi campaign in the lead up to the leadership contest, the Conservative MP took to Twitter to offer her ‘warm congratulations’ to the country’s new leader.
She said: “After a tough campaign between two excellent candidates, I warmly congratulate Liz Truss on her victory.
“Liz has already promised an announcement on energy bills in the coming days and I’ll be giving her all my support in developing help for households and businesses in West Berks.”
She added: “I will also be working with ministers on the issues that my constituents have raised with me over the summer including energy market reform to build resilience for the long term."
Truss, who became an MP only 12 years ago, will have had one of the quickest transitions from MP to PM in recent history.
She beat Sunak with 81,326 votes to 60,399 making her the third female Prime Minister in the UK.
