Fatality at Ufton Nervet level crossing
British Transport Police spokesman David Hodgson confirmed that a male motorcycle rider in his 40s had died after being hit by a train at the crossing at 1.10pm.
The death is not being treated as suspicious.
Train operator First Great Western confirmed that the driver of the 12.18pm First Great Western London Paddington to Taunton service reported hitting a vehicle at the level crossing.
The train came to rest about 400 meters west of the Ufton Nervet level crossing.
Services were suspended in the immediate area while a full investigation was carried out.
Speaking from the scene (pictured), investigating officer, inspector Tony Lodge of the British Transport Police said none of the train passengers had been injured in the incident.
He added: “We’re working as fast as we can to establish what has occurred at this location.
“We need to make sure we secure evidence, witnesses and CCTV to try and establish what has occurred.
“We can’t say at this stage what contributed to this incident.
“The good thing is that nobody is injured on the train. The ambulance checked that as soon as possible.
Inspector Lodge would not answer questions on whether safety improvements were required at the crossing.
“I don’t think we can say at this stage what can be improved if anything,” he added.
Thames Valley Police concluded its investigation at the scene at approximately 3.45pm.
A statement released by Network Rail said: “Early investigations appear to show that the level crossing equipment was in working order.”
Roads including Ufton Lane are currently closed to traffic and trains across the area have been delayed as a result of the incident, which is ongoing.
Buses replaced trains between Reading and Newbury and Bedwyn, with journey times extended by up to 60 minutes until 7pm
The crossing hit national headlines back in 2004 when seven people died.
It was also the scene of a near miss in September 2011, and an investigation by the RAIB is ongoing.
Human error was blamed when a car, which was approaching from the south on Ufton Lane, had to stop suddenly to avoid colliding with the train when the barrier failed.
