Father from Speen to take on epic charity challenge
Brian Morgan hoping to raise £5,000 by walking from London to Land's End
A FATHER from Speen will be putting on his walking boots this summer as he aims to raise vital funds for a children’s charity by completing a 335-mile trek.
Brian Morgan hopes to raise at least £5,000 for Make-A-Wish UK by walking from London’s St Paul’s Cathedral to Land's End in just 12 days.
The 46-year-old kitchen fitter said he decided on the spur of the moment to do his bit for charity, having never taken part in any fundraising before.
Mr Morgan, who has four children, said: “I just decided that I wanted to do something for charity.
“Thankfully all our kids are healthy. We’ve been lucky enough to never need any help from a charity, but I really just wanted to raise some money.
“I decided to do it for Make-A-Wish – it was always going to be a children’s charity and Make-A-Wish UK is a recognised charity. The work they do makes such an incredible difference to some very deserving children and also their families.”
The challenge, which will take place next month, will see Mr Morgan walk more than a marathon every day for 12 days before spending the night at pre-booked Premier Inns.
With time ticking down to the trek, Mr Morgan, who is self-employed, is well under way with his training to ensure he is physically and mentally able to complete the challenge, which he hopes will raise at least £5,000.
“I’ve set myself a target because I’m taking two weeks off work and paying for the hotels, so I really want to raise a lot more money than I’m spending, otherwise I could have just donated the money myself,” he said.
“It’s going to be tough, not just physically but mentally.
“There’ll be no one there to support me and I’ve never been away from my family for that long before, but it’s for a great cause, so I’m confident that I’ll be able to get Land’s End.”
Mr Morgan will set off on his London to Land’s End trek on June 12 and hopes to arrive at his destination on June 24 before getting the train back to his family in Speen.
