Faulty Thames Water traffic lights cause Newbury rush hour gridlock
Chaos for motorists this morning as temporary lights are stuck on red
FAULTY temporary traffic lights were to blame for this morning's rush hour gridlock in Newbury (Monday).
The lights were put up by Thames Water yesterday (Sunday) so it could carry out emergency repair work on the A339 close to St Gabriel's School.
But today, the lights were stuck on red, causing mayhem for motorists.
Some reported it taking an hour to travel two miles from Tot Hill Services, down the Newtown straight and into town.
There could be more bad news to come - Thames Water believe the work could take five days to complete, which means more delays are likely throughout the week.
West Berkshire Council said the first it knew of the roadworks was when it started receiving complaints about the traffic today.
