Thatcham’s Blue Plaques are open for suggestions
Thatcham Town Council is asking residents to help shape the future of their blue plaques.
Since October 6, 2018, a plaque has been released annually, with residents now encouraged to put forward suggestions for 2026 and beyond.
Whether it’s a remarkable local figure, a historic building, or an event that left its mark on Thatcham, the town council and its heritage working party wants the community to have its say.
Blue plaques are a way of sharing stories that might otherwise remain hidden forever, from pioneering inventors and wartime heroes, to cultural milestones and iconic landmarks.
Nathan Gregory, chair of the heritage working party, said: “Blue plaques are a wonderful way to connect our community with its history.
“By sharing your ideas, you can help ensure that Thatcham’s stories – big and small – are remembered and celebrated where they truly belong: in the heart of the town.”
The town council said that each plaque helps bring Thatcham’s heritage to life for future generations.
Residents can submit their ideas by completing the proposal form on the Thatcham Town Council website.
When making a suggestion, the council asks that people include the name of the person, building, or event beng put forward, with an explanation of the historical evidence alongside where the desired location would be.
This year’s blue plaque, commemorates Moorside’s role as a WWII storage depot and supply base.
It will be unveiled on Sunday, October 19 as part of the Thatcham Festival.
Full details of the town’s existing blue plaques can be found on the Thatcham Town Council website.
