Final preparations being made for Newbury Carnival
The carnival parade and fete will take place in the town on Sunday, with more than 60 entrants so far for the parade
FINAL preparations are now being made for Newbury Carnival, which takes place in the town on Sunday (July 10).
The Carnival fete in Northcroft Park will be opened by Mike Nova's Elvis tribute at 12 noon and will continue through to 6pm with a funfair, dozens of stalls, children's rides and activities, refreshments and entertainment, including live music.
The parade itself this year has the theme ‘Going for Gold' and it will start at 2pm with a Harley Davidson ride-through ahead of the parade, which will be led by Newbury town crier, Brian Sylvester.
There are more than 60 entrants so far for the parade, which will take the route from Pound Street to Bartholomew Street and Northbrook Street, before progressing to Oxford Road and Old Bath Road and finishing at Northcroft Park.
Judging will take place en route, led by the mayor of Newbury, Jeff Beck, and the parade prize giving is due to take place at the Carnival Fete in Northcroft Park at about 4pm.
Carnival chairman, Bryan Harper, said he was looking forward to the parade, adding that he was hoping for good weather and bumper crowds on the day.
He said: “Many people have worked really hard to make this year's carnival more lively and exciting than ever.
“We've got fantastic ‘Going for Gold' parade entries that show how people are really committed to a great carnival and I am absolutely delighted.”
Mr Harper said he was also pleased there were two couples set to join the parade to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary, while he said the event should be a good opportunity for charities to raise money, adding that he hoped Eight Bells for Mental Health - this year's nominated charity - would get a great boost from the carnival.
Mr Harper said there was still time to enter the parade and entry forms are available online by clicking the link below or from Jacquie Cooper on 01635 528210.
Meanwhile, Newbury Camera Club is running a competition with cash prizes for the best pictures of the day in two categories; over 18s and people aged 18 and above.
