Fire at The Downgate

A spokeswoman for West Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Nicole Targett, said: “We responded to a call at 3.24pm. Firefighters on the scene report a shed well alight and that flames have spread to the adjoining pub via a roof void.”
Fire engines from Hungerford and Newbury are in attendance at the Park Street hostelry, run by veteran licensee David Yates, and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using hose reels on the flames.
The fire was out by 4.33pm but firefighters remained on the scene using thermal imaging characters to check for hot spots.
There was some fire and smoke damage to the building but the pub later reopened.
