Fire crews called to Hungerford straw blaze
Crews from Newbury, Hungerford and Pangbourne were called to Salisbury Road at 9.23pm yesterday.
A spokeswoman for the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Nicole Targett, said that approximately 200 tonnes of straw were well alight.
The fire has been extinguished but crews were at the scene damping down and turning over the straw bales overnight.
She added that Newbury crews had left the scene at around 9am but firefighters would be maintaining inspections over the site throughout the day.
Around 50 homes were without power overnight while SSE isolated electrics at a nearby telegraph pole and transformer.
A spokeswoman for SSE, Morven Smith, said that the power had been switched off at around 10.20pm but added that the power had been restored at around 9am after fire crews gave the all clear.
Thames Valley Police are treating the fire as a suspected arson.
