Fire crews remain at scene of industrial barn fire in Burghfield, West Berkshire




Fire crews remain at the scene of a fire that broke in Burghfield yesterday (Monday).

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service received reports of the fire at industrial barn on Theale Road at 5.08pm.

Plumes of smoke filled the sky and were visible across the M4 from Junction 12 as nine fire crews were sent to the scene.

A spokesperson said: "Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service crews from Caversham Road, Wokingham Road, Newbury, Hungerford, Mortimer, Ascot, Whitley Wood, Wokingham and Theale were sent to the scene alongside three officers.

"Three 4x4s, a water carrier and an incident command unit were also sent to the scene.

"Crews from Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service also attended the incident."

He said: "Upon arrival, crews discovered a fire in an industrial barn.

"Using six jets, four high-pressure hose reels and a high-volume pump, firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus extinguished the fire, whilst protecting surrounding barns and fields.

"Crews remain on the scene damping down remaining hotspots."

He said further updates will be provided in due course.

Thames Valley Police were at the scene last night and put a cordon in place.

Officers advised members of the public in surrounding areas to keep doors and windows closed.

Many residents took to social media as black smoke filled the sky.
