Firefighters battle Chieveley roof blaze

According to Phil Knight, the watch manager of White Watch at Newbury Fire Station, one pump from Newbury, along with two more, from Whitley Wood in Reading and also Hungerford, were called at 9pm to an East Lane roof void fire, in a 12m by 6m by 3m shed/outbuilding.
“One end of the building was well alight with 15ft flames,” said Mr Knight.
No-one was hurt, after the householder was alerted to the fire by a passing neighbour.
Around 15 firefighters at the scene tackled the blaze with hoses and wearing breathing apparatus and also by cutting away the roof tiles and burnt areas, to prevent the fire from spreading.
The cause was put down to a fire which spread from a bonfire nearby, a situation which triggered a safety message from the fire service:
“Keep bonfires away from outbuildings and sheds - especially in the drier summer weather,” said Mr Knight.
The outbuilding was 30 per cent destroyed in the fire.
Firefighters left the scene after around three hours.
