Firefighters battle two M4 collisions near Newbury

Mike Wilson, Red Watch manager at Newbury Fire Station, said three fire crews - a total of 15 firefighters with a heavy rescue unit from Newbury - from the local area were called out to a collision between a Volvo and an HGV cab between junctions 12 (Theale) and 13 (Chieveley) westbound at 2.30am, where a woman had to be cut free from her car.
But as a crew from Dee Road Fire Station in Tilehurst were on their way to the incident, they were flagged down by a minibus driver to attend another incident nearby, also between junctions 12 and 13 of the M4 westbound, after a Peugot 206 had left the motorway and ended up in a field. Gareth Evans, Red Watch manager at Dee Road Fire Station, said they called for backup to be sent to the initial incident while they dealt with the second one.
Mr Wilson said firefighters dealing with the initial incident had battled for one-and-a-half hours to free a woman from the Volvo, who was taken to hospital by ambulance. The HGV cab driver was uninjured.
One lane of the motorway was closed during the incident, and the incident was closed at 4.35am.
Mr Evans said the man involved in the second incident had to be helped from the vehicle by the firefighters and was attended to by parademics.
This incident was closed after 40 minutes.
