Firefighters called to three Berkshire incidents during New Years strike
The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service received three calls during the six-hour strike period, for which 10 contingency fire engines were available.
In West Berkshire, emergency crews from Newbury were called to deal with a chimney fire at Layleys Green, Curridge, at 00.04am.
The Curridge fire followed two people being rescued from a house fire in Earley at 6.47pm - 17 minutes into the industrial action.
Both suffered severe smoke inhalation and were taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital.
Four firefighters in breathing apparatus used hosereels and a jet to put out the fire, which is believed to have started in a bedroom. The Red Cross Fire Emergency Support team also attended.
Elsewhere, a grass fire on waste ground next to Marlborough Road, Maidenhead was tackled by at 8.39pm.
One firefighter used a hosereel to extinguish the small fire, which the fire service believes to have been started by a stray firework.
Acting Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Andy Mancey, said: “I would like to thank members of the public for helping us by not making unnecessary 999 calls and for following safety advice.
"We hope that they will again Take Extra Care on Friday morning between 06.30 and 08.30 during the next period of industrial action.”
