The White Watch crew from Whitley Wood Fire Station, who were providing standby cover at Newbury Fire Station during flood operations, were called shortly after 1pm to grounds situated at the rear of the Newbury Manor Hotel, in London Road, after reports of black smoke in that area.
One firefighter extinguished the blaze, believed to have contained plastic material, with a hosereel.
The incident was not being treated as suspicious by the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS), who put the incident down to controlled burning.
Firefighters left the scene at 1.30pm
