Firefighters from two counties battle Burghclere blaze

According to Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, a total 40 firefighters battled the blaze at a house in Harts Lane, after a call at 4.28pm.
Two pumps from Newbury fire station, along with pumps from Kingsclere, Tadley, and Overton, plus a special equipment unit and support pump from Overton and multi roll unit from Rushmoor, were at the scene, after the blaze spread from the ground, to the first floor.
Watch manager of Green Watch at Newbury Fire Station, Richard Young, who was at the scene, said the fire started in a chimney and spread to the void between the house walls:
"The chimney hadn't been lit for some time and may have needed a clean - but the incident is under investigation by the fire service as to the cause," said Mr Young, adding:
"We managed to stop it so the house wasn't damaged, except for the external side of the house."
The occupants he said, had already got out of the house when firefighters arrived. No-one was hurt.
Firefighters used four sets of breathing apparatus and foam was inserted into the cavity wall to extinguish the fire.
One of the station commanders at the scene, Dave Graham, said extra pumps were called out, due to the possibility of the fire spreading to the rest of the house:
"When an incident escalates to this level additional support vehicles like the incident command unit and special equipment unit also attend to provide support," said Mr Graham, adding:"It was a difficult fire to tackle because of its location in the cavity."
Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed cavity wall insulation was not a factor in the fire.
The property was a two-storey, brick and tile house, measuring 19m by 13m.
The incident was closed at 8.42pm by the fire service.
