One pump from Dee Road Fire Station, Tilehurst, was called at 11.10am to a house in Tuscan Close.
A woman had telephoned the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) for help, after being trapped in a bedroom, due to a faulty door lock mechanism, together with her two-year-old child.
Firefighters erected a ladder and climbed in through the bedroom window, before dismantling the lock from the inside.
The woman and child were unhurt.
Firefighters left the scene after half an hour.
