Firefighters rescue cow in calf from Tilehurst river

Spokeswoman for the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Nicole Targett, said crews were called at 7.33am to the River Thames, in Scour s Lane, near Tilehurst Railway Station, after a member of the public reported spotting the Holstein cow was in trouble in the river to emergency services.
Command control and heavy rescue units from Tilehurst and a pump from Wokingham Road, Reading, were called to the incident.
After attempting unsuccessfully to persuade the cow out of the water, firefighters put a harness on it and swam it along the river, before reaching a shallower part of the bank and taking off the harness.
The cow then managed to get to safety on the river bank, encouraged by the firefighters and was unharmed, along with its unborn calf:
“They had to be very gentle,” said Ms Targett, adding the cow had since recovered from the ordeal and both cow and unborn calf were since “Doing well,” she said.
Firefighters helped the cow back into a field before leaving the scene at 9.15am.
