Firefighters rescue dog after wading through canal off A4 in Newbury

Crew manager of Blue Watch, Jason Cunningham, said three pumps, including two from Newbury and a third from Kingsclere, together with a specialist water rescue crew and command unit, were called at 6.20pm to the canal, at the side of Poundstretcher and Tesco, off the A4/ London Road.
A dog was stuck on the far bank, thought to have broken its leg, whilst chasing a deer.
Firefighters waded through the water to the opposite bank then carried the large dog - thought to have been a South African Ridgeback - back through the water to safety.
“He saw something on the bank opposite - possibly a deer - and swam across to the opposite bank, started chasing it and suffered a (suspected) broken leg, then couldn’t get back across,” said Mr Cunningham.
The owner, who was waiting on the opposite bank, then took the dog, which was cold and wet, to the vets.
Firefighters left the scene at around 7.30pm.
