According to Phil Knight watch manager of White Watch at Newbury Fire Station, pumps from Newbury, Whitley Wood and Tilehurst fire stations, along with the water rescue unit from Caversham Road, Reading were called to Dreweatt's Lock.
The Shire horse, Monty, was believed to have been pulling a narrowboat and lost its footing, falling into the canal. It was hauled to safety by firefighters and was soon back on its feet.
