Firefighters rescue teenager from mud in Kintbury
Watch manager of White Watch at Newbury Fire Station, Phil Knight, said three pumps, from fire stations in Newbury, Hungerford and Caversham Road, Reading - a total 15 firefighters - were called at 2pm to Wallingtons Road, to a wooded area near a lake, where a teenage girl was trapped up to her waist in mud.
“She was a little distressed,” said Mr Knight.
Firefighters used a special pole, complete with extending rods and a safety harness to reach the girl.
The safety harness was then wrapped around her, then firefighters made a platform to work from, before digging her out out of the mud and leading her to safety.
Police and ambulance services were also at the scene and it is believed the girl was unhurt.
The incident was not being treated as suspicious.
Firefighters left the scene after 30 minutes.
Mr Knight issued a safety warning afterwards of the dangers of marshy ground, due to continued high water levels, following recent floods:
“Youngsters and others should be aware of lakes and muddy areas - although it’s nice weather be aware of boggy marshland,” said Mr Knight.
