Firefighters save Membury workshop from destruction

Four fire engines sent to smoke-logged premises

FIREFIGHTERS saved a smoke-logged Membury workshop from destruction last night (Wed), after making a forced entry.

One fire engine from Newbury was called at 8.40pm to a workshop on the Membury Industrial Estate, joined by another pump from Newbury and two more from Wiltshire, with a total 18 firefighters at the scene.

On arrival at the empty premises, firefighters discovered smoke issuing from the sides of a locked roller shutter door and used heavy rescue equipment to make a forced entry.

A dehumidifier was discovered alight in the smoke-logged premises.

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire using two jets.

The cause was put down to accidental.

Very light damage to the property was estimated at 3 to 4 square feet of fire (damage), with smoke damage to the rest of the building.

Firefighters departed the scene at 11.30pm
