Firefighters tackle 3 tree fires in 4 days in Newbury and surrounding area

FIREFIGHTERS have tackled three tree blazes in four days this week, including two near a Newbury football club and a third this morning (Wed) over the county border at a Woolton Hill beauty spot.

One pump from Newbury Fire Station was called at 11.07am today (Wed) to The Chase, a National Trust owned beauty spot in Woolton Hill.

A blazing tree, near to the car park, was extinguished by firefighters using a hosereel, before they departed at 11.46am, cause accidental.

Yesterday (Tuesday) one pump from Newbury Fire Station was called at 6.45am to a blazing hollow tree, next to the Kennet and Avon Canal, behind Newbury FC in Faraday Road.

Firefighters used a tank of water and also buckets of water from the canal to extinguish the blaze, which was not adjacent to any building, before departing at 8.30am.

"It was near to other trees, but they were not affected," said a firefighter who was at the scene.

A further tree blaze on Sunday morning (Aug 14), also near the football ground, involved one fire engine from Newbury Fire Station called at 9.33am.

A tree was discovered smoldering and firefighters used a portable pump to extinguish the fire before departing at 10.44am, with no details as to the cause of the latter two fires.
