Firefighters to hold 24-hour strike from 7am tomorrow (Wednesday)
Members of the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) will be taking part, including those employed by the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS).
It is the latest period of industrial action against changes to its pay and pension scheme, and comes after the 2015 firefighters’ pension scheme legislation was voted through by MPs earlier this month.
It is said that, while Westminster fire minister Penny Mordaunt guaranteed that no firefighters aged 55 or over would be fired or received a reduced pension, not enough was being done to ensure that individual fire authorities would comply with the guarantee.
FBU general secretary Matt Wrack said: "Firefighters still face the choice of either being sacked or receiving a severely reduced pension if they fail fitness tests as a result of naturally declining fitness through age."
Contingency crews will be called in to provide cover during the strike period on Wednesday, however the RBFRS is urging residents only to call the service in a genuine emergency.
Life critical incidents will be prioritised, such as house fires and road traffic collisions where people are trapped.
