Firefighters wake street of sleeping people to move vehicles to access Newbury fire
Spokeswoman for the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) Nicole Targett, said two crews were called at11.49pm from Newbury and Whitley Wood Fire Stations to Garland Court, Berkeley Road, to a fire in the bedroom of a first floor flat.
Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hosereels to extinguish the fire.
The cause was not known.
One person was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.
Firefighters left the scene at 12.41am today (Wed).
Thames Valley Police spokeswoman, Rhianne Pope, said police were called at 11.49pm.
Occupants evacuated by firefighters were returned to the building shortly after 1am.
Police were not treating the incident as suspicious and closed the incident at 1.50am.
A local woman who did not want to be named, said the fire engines were initially unable to get through the road, due to parked vehicles and had to knock on doors to wake sleeping occupants and ask for the cars to be moved, before reaching the fire.
