Firefighters warn residents to sweep chimneys after Compton fire

One crew from Newbury Fire Station was alerted to a chimney fire in Westfields, Compton, by another firefighter who was assisting with flood relief operations nearby.
They attended at 7.10pm and remained at the scene for around an hour to extinguish the fire.
Crew manager Barry Whiting said the NewburyToday this morning: “All we can do is remind people to get their chimneys swept on a regular basis.
“It’s probably due to a build-up of carbon deposits.
“The longer the winter draws out the more deposits you get up your chimney and they can get very, very hot and become like coal up the chimney.”
