Firefighters work around the clock to tackle Aldworth straw bale fire
Spokeswoman for the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) NicoleTargett, said one pump was called yesterday (Wed) at 2.33pm from Tilehurst, to Ambury Road, to be joined by two more pumps, including a Newbury crew.
Approximately 120 tonnes of straw bales were on fire, (pictured) next to a hedgerow, also affected by the blaze.
Richard Cooper, a firefighter with Green Watch at Newbury Fire Station, who was at the scene, said three piles of straw in close proximity were destroyed in the blaze and continued:
“As it was a hot dry day, embers from the fire spread to bushes, which were alight.”
“The straw was packed together so it’s best to let it burn out.”
Firefighters used hosereels to extinguish the blaze.
Relief crews of firefighters were sent throughout the night, with firefighters remaining at the scene today, after the fire service stopped the incident at 7.30am and to make further inspections of the smouldering heaps of straw.
The cause was to be established.
The landowner was also yet to be established, but was believed to be either Yattendon Estates, or a Compton farmer, both of whom were unavailable to comment.
