The first bricks were laid for the foundations of Tadley’s new £885,000 youth centre building on Tuesday.

Planning permission was granted in November for the two-storey building to be built on part of the former Burnham Copse Infant School site, in Newchurch Road, behind Tadley and District Community Centre.

A ceremony attended by Tadley Town and borough councillors, for the laying of the first bricks for the foundations of the building was held on Tuesday.

The first bricks for the centre were laid by Harry Poile aged 14, a Tadley Youth Council member and Becky Quelch chairwoman of the youth council, aged 16.

Also at the ceremony were Adrian Noad, chairman of Tadley and District Community Association who has overseen the project, along with chairman of Tadley Town Council David Leeks, (Con, Tadley Central), town councillor Jo Slimin (Lib Dem, Tadley Central) and Basingstoke and Deane borough councillor Marilyn Tucker (Con, Pamber and Silchester).

Funds for the building include: Public Works loan – £150,000, Turbury Allotment Charity – £300,000, Greenham Common Trust – £65,000, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council – £182,300, Tadley Town Council – £160,000 as well as individual donations.
