First phase of £240,000 Tadley scheme underway
The work to improve pedestrian links and crossing points, as well as develop new cycleways in and around Tadley and in New Road, Franklin Avenue, Wigmore Heath and Pamber Heath Road/Rowan Road started on Monday.
Part of the scheme also involves reducing the speed limit to 40mph on Silchester Road.
The aim is to make it more convenient for the community to access facilities such as schools, workplaces, shops, health centres and leisure outlets.
Councillor Mel Kendal (Con, New Milton), Hampshire County Council executive member for environment and transport, said that being able to travel easily and safely in one’s own community was an important factor contributing to people’s quality of life.
“Walking to school, work or the local shops is a simple way to build exercise into a daily routine and helps to support community life,” said Mr Kendal.
“The reduced speed limit on Silchester Road should also reduce the negative impact of traffic passing through the village.
“I am grateful to Hampshire County councillor Marilyn Tucker (Con, Tadley and Baughurst) for her support and contribution in the development of this scheme.”
The work is being carried out using developers’ contributions, by Rocon Contractors, on behalf of the county council.
The work is expected to last for 18 weeks.
