First Scout group starts in Aldermaston
Wearing neckerchiefs of green and gold symbolising local woodland and Aldermaston’s Williams Pear, said to be grown by a local schoolteacher in 1765, 18 Beavers, 19 Cubs and five leaders from the 1st Aldermaston Scouts were invested by the district commissioner for Pang Valley Scouts, Simon Pickett at a ceremony last month.
Group member Bruce Jackson said: “Having scouts in Aldermaston is helping Berkshire scouts achieve their growth targets, and takes the pressure off the nearby Burghfield group who are bursting and have long waiting lists. This allows local young people to get into Scouting without having to wait, or travel too far.
“This of course allows more young people to get into the things that scouting offers; adventurous activities, nights away, challenges and lots of fun. We're really looking forward to getting out into the great countryside around Aldermaston.
“Already it's bringing together young people who live close to each other, but might not actually know each other. We have children from Aldermaston CofE, Brimpton and Alder Bridge Schools and already friendships are being formed.”
He added that the group was looking to start a Scout pack later this year but was looking for more members and volunteers.
The pack meets at the Alderbridge Steiner Waldorf School in Padworth on Thursday evenings.
