Five fire engines called to Burghfield wood chip machine blaze

20 tonnes of wood ablaze

FIVE fire engines were called to a Burghfield blaze in large wood chipping machinery this afternoon (Tues).

Two pumps called at 1pm from Dee Road, Tilehurst and Caversham Road, Reading, to John Mould Recycling Centre, in Berry’s Lane, were then joined by two more pumps from Whitley Wood and Wokingham, plus a water carrier from Bracknell.

On arrival firefighters found a wood chipping machine containing 20 tonnes of wood well alight.

Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire using three main jets.

No-one was hurt, with the cause recorded as accidental.

A crew manager at the scene afterwards paid tribute to the health and safety methods utilised by the company, which had he said prevented the fire from spreading to any other machinery, or property at the site.

Firefighters left the scene at 4.30pm.
