Flash floods caused disruption across West Berkshire yesterday (Monday)

Floodwater over a foot deep pooled in less than half an hour outside Pound Street estate agents Hillier & Wilson according to owner Tony Hillier.
Staff were forced to board up part of its front door and lay out sandbags at around 3.30pm in a bid to protect it from flooding.
“It regularly occurs in this spot and the council have never done anything about it,” said Mr Hillier. “They have spent millions on flood defences [elsewhere] but we have repeatedly been flooded and nothing happens.
“Having had this numerous times, when we get these flash floods we have to batten down the hatches, put up a board and sandbags to help prevent the water coming in.”
He added that Pound Street businesses and properties were also having to contend with mud, dirt and silt brought into their premises’ and onto pavements by the floodwater.
Around 30 minutes later, Holt Road, Kintbury, was closed after a BMW became stuck in floodwater.
Thames Valley Police sent a 4x4 vehicle to assist with removing the vehicle from the water.
Problems with floodwater was also reported in Skinner’s Green Lane, Enborne, and Enborne Road, with motorists still being warned to “pass with care” this morning (Tuesday).
Meanwhile, the heavy rainfall caused drains to become overloaded outside Newbury train station, with water flooding onto the tracks and closing one platform at the station.
A Thames Water spokeswoman, who asked not to be named, said an engineer had visited the site this morning and that drain flooding was no longer an issue there.
“Recent heavy rain led to surface water flooding near Newbury Station and also caused our sewer network to overflow,” she said. “We’ve checked the area this morning and there is no longer water coming up from under the manhole cover.
“We’re continuing to work with West Berkshire Council and Network Rail to look at how flooding in that area is dealt with in the long term.”
