Flipped car closes Theale swing bridge

Delays to road and river traffic

THEALE's swing bridge was closed this afternoon after a car flipped and blocked the road.

The bridge, connecting Hangar and Station Road, was closed to road and canal traffic after a 4x4 overturned on the bridge.

The district councillor for Theale, Alan Macro, said that the vehicle had appeared to hit a barrier intended to enforce the width restriction.

He said that vehicles approaching from Theale had to turn round in the entrance to New Mill.

Mr Macro added that the Canals and Rivers Trust inspected the bridge once the vehicle had been removed.

A spokeswoman for Thames Valley Police, Charlotte Redman, said that the female driver was not hurt and that the road had reopened at about 5pm.
