Flood alerts on four local rivers following thaw
Snow and ice melting is straining river and ground water levels affecting Newbury and surrounding areas, including Lambourn and Great Shefford.
According to the Environment Agency, flood alerts were currently affecting the rivers Thames, Lambourn, Kennet and Pang, with flooding in the Lambourn valley catchment area and tankers reported to be ferrying water away in Great Shefford.
A flood alert is in place on the River Lambourn and tributaries, from Lambourn to Shaw, including Eastbury, East Garston, Welford, Easton, Boxford, Woodspeeen, Bagnor, Donnington, Great Shefford stream and Winterbourne on the Winterbourne stream.
River levels were this morning (Monday) described as high, according to the EA and over the banks in some places, especially in Eastbury and Bagnor. River levels were expected to remain high for several weeks. No property flooding was currently expected.
An alert is also in place on the River Kennet and its tributaries, from Berwick Bassett down to Newbury, where the river level is expected to remain high for several weeks. No property flooding was currently expected.
Groundwater flooding continues in the Lambourn Valley catchment, where river levels remain high, but show a slow decline, with flooding possible. The situation was likely to continue for several weeks.
Groundwater flooding was also affecting West and East Ilsley, Compton, Chilton and West Hagbourne, with flooding possible and the situation set to continue for several weeks.
A flood alert was also in place on the River Thames from Pangbourne to Purley, with flooding of low lying land and roads reported this morning (Mon). No property flooding was expected.
A flood alert on the River Thames was also in place from Days Lock to above Pangbourne, including Goring and Streatley, where river levels remained high this morning and were expected to continue rising slowly over the next two days. No property flooding was expected.
A flood alert was also in place on the River Pang, from East Ilsley to Pangbourne and Sulham Brook, where river levels were reported this morning as high and out of banks in places. No property flooding was expected.
