Flood warnings in Newbury increase giving fire services a busy day





The Environment Agency (EA) today (Tues) issued a flood warning (immediate action required) for the River Enborne, from Gore End to Aldermaston.
A flood warning is also in place for the River Kennet , from Theale to Reading.
Flood alerts (flooding possible, be prepared), have also been issued for the River Thames, from Days Lock to Pangbourne and also Pangbourne to Purley, the River Kennet, from Berwick Bassett down to Newbury and also Thatcham to Reading and the River Pang, from East Ilsley to Pangbourne and Sulham Brook and River Enborne and Foudry Brook.
Tilehurst firefighters were called at 8.45am to Station Road, Woolhampton to a cottage threatened with flooding at the side of the Kennet and Avon Canal:
Firefighters pumped water out of the garden to prevent it coming through the floorboards. The flow was stemmed with sandbags and firefighters leaving the scene at 11.30am.
At 12pm, pumps from Whitley Wood and Mortimer fire stations, together with the animal rescue unit from Caversham Road, Reading, were called to Sulhamstead Hill where three horses were stranded in flooded fields.
Firefighters waded through four feet of water to lead the horses to safety, where they were checked over by a vet before being stabled by the owner.
Firefighters left the scene after one hour.
At 12.30pm, Newbury firefighters were also called to a house fire in Old College Road, Newbury.
The fire was in a study, caused by a fault in underfloor heating.
The blaze spread to a mattress, extinguished by two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using a hosereel.
Firefighters left the scene after one and a half hours.
