Flooding at Burghfield substation under control and no homes without power, say SSE

Yesterday (Sat), fire crews, army troops and other public agencies were called to assist Scottish and Southern Electric (SSE) in protecting the Pingewood substation from flooding.
Part of the outside area at the substation has been flooded, but the equipment has not been affected and no power has been lost to properties as a result according to SSE.
Around 8,000 properties locallycould be without power if the station is flooded.
A pump is at the site helping to keep floodwater at a manageable level.
The head of engineering at Southern Electric Power Distribution, Alan Broadbent, said this afternoon: “We have been monitoring the risk of flooding to Burghfield substation for a number of days and as soon as it was apparent that the situation might get worse we put in place our flood contingency plans.
“We have had staff on site round the clock ensuring the safe operation of the site.
“Through the multi-agency resilience group, we have secured assistance from the fire service and a number of other agencies, and our equipment has been protected by the work carried out to stabilise the water levels.
“There are no homes without power as a result of this situation and I want to reassure people in the area that the situation is under control.
“Our priority remains keeping the power on and so work to reduce the water levels is continuing, which further diminishes the risk to our equipment.
“The armed forces are assisting the Environment Agency in their efforts to stem a breech to the nearby pond which has been the cause of the flooding. “
