Flowers laid at scene of Parkway tragedy

Tributes have been paid and flowers placed at Parkway site where construction worker was killed

FLOWERS have been laid at the scene where a forklift driver was tragically killed in a horrific accident at the Parkway development in Newbury on Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for Parkway, Christina Gillings confirmed today (Friday) that work had resumed on Costain's £150 million Parkway mixed-use retail project following the death of an as-yet-unnamed 41-year old man at the site in Northbrook Street.

He was pronounced dead on arrival by emergency services after the forklift vehicle he was driving toppled over at 9.10am.

The next of kin have been informed, but details of the man's identity have not been officially released.

Tributes have been paid and condolences sent to the man's friends and family through Facebook and the Newburytoday.co.uk Twitter page @newburytoday.

Construction workers had been sent home following the incident, but from yesterday afternoon were allowed back on site and work is gradually resuming on the development, which has a scheduled opening date of Thursday, October 27.

The Health and Safety Executive is currently investigating the incident.
