Fond farewell for Corner Stores couple

Simon and Jessie Johal are retiring from the Corner Stores in Kintbury after almost 20 years

KINTBURY villagers are bidding a fond farewell this week to a couple who have run the Corner Stores for almost 20 years.

Simon and Jessie Johal, who took over the Corner Stores in the High Street in October 1991, are retiring today (Thursday), with Jay Mungar set to take over the running of the stores.

Mr Johal said the couple's move to the village was “the best move” they had ever made, adding that he and his wife had thoroughly enjoyed their time at the shop.

He said: “We will miss this shop, we have had a very nice 20 years here and we have made a lot of friends.”

Mrs Johal added that she too had mixed feelings about retiring, adding that she would be sad to be leaving the shop and would miss all the customers.

And the feeling is mutual, as Kintbury villager Pauline Eborall said the Johals had been wonderful for the village.

She said: “They will be sorely missed in the village as they have been terrific.

“They are a lovely part of the community and everyone will be sorry to see them go.”

Mr and Mrs Johal said they will, however, remain in the area, adding that they would continue to live in Inkpen.
