West Bershire Council announces winners for food waste vehicle naming competition
West Berkshire Council has released the winning names of its new food waste vehicles.
The announcement comes as the council introduces its new weekly kerbside food recycling collections.
More than 100 entries were received from primary school children through a competition held in September.
The eight winners will receive their prizes soon, which include book tokens and family swim passes.
The judging panel said it was pleased to announce the eight winning names, which are: The Hungry Recycler, Composter Clemmie, Sir Andy Curry, Betty Banana, Food Feaster 2.0, Garbage Gobbler, Pikachew and Eva Egg Shell.
Executive member for environment and waste at West Berkshire Council, Steve Ardagh-Walter (Con, Thatcham Colthrop and Crookham), said: "It’s great to have had the help of primary school children across West Berkshire in naming our new food waste vehicles.
"We had some brilliant names submitted and it was hard to choose the winners but more importantly, this competition has helped raise awareness about the importance of food waste recycling amongst younger people."
Sara Perry, general manager for Veolia West Berkshire, added: "A huge well done to all of the schools that entered. We are thrilled that our new vehicles will now have names that residents can look out for when they are on their rounds."
As of Monday (October 31) the council has introduced a new separate weekly food waste collection service, with a further collection starting from Monday, November 28 for residents with shared bins stored in a communal bin area.
Please visit www.westberks.gov.uk/foodwaste for more information on the new service.
The council claims on average more than 25 per cent of the current general waste black bins are used for is food waste. They are therefore making changes so that food waste is collected from a smaller, more secure container to encourage residents to recycle it instead.
Separate food waste collections will commence on a weekly basis on the same day as black bin and recycling collections. Residents can recycle the same types of food waste as the council's current food waste collection service, and are further reminded to only use compostable liners.
