Footballing legend among the ranks at grand opening of Bar Sport
Hundreds of people attended the opening of the new Bar Sport, Sports Bar & Grill at the site of the former George and Pelican Pub in Bartholemew Street.
The venue, which boasts over 40 HD and 3D TV screens, showing live sport all day every day, has created 30 full and part time jobs.
Managing director and owner, Claudio Altini, said: “I am lost for words really, tonight has been absolutely overwhelming.
“We have worked so hard to create something new for Newbury and the level of support and interest from people in the town has been fantastic.
“We are really pleased with how it looks and can’t wait to welcome people in.”
Le Tissier, who played played 443 times for Southampton between 1986 and 2002, said: “I was speaking to Claudio earlier and said we need one of these in Southampton. There is football, cricket and golf, what is there not to like?
Le Tissier also told the Newbury Weekly News about his beloved Southampton’s chances of maintaining their early season form.
“Saints are absolutely flying this year but have some big, big games coming up over Christmas so that will be the true test. If they can get through those they could have a very good season.”
