Former Archbishop of Canterbury to speak at Newbury Dignity in Dying event
A CAMPAIGNER for Dignity in Dying has arranged a conference involving luminaries including a former Archbishop of Canterbury.
The event, ‘An Open and Honest Discussion’ will be held in the Royal British Legion, Pelican Lane, Newbury, on Thursday, March 21.
Guests will include the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Carey; Conservative MP for North West Hampshire, Kit Malthouse; retired intensive care medicine consultant Barry Newman and barrister Graeme Wood.
Sara Fenton from Hungerford, whose husband opted to end his life at the Dignitas clinic in Switzerland, said: “Many people don’t know the difference between assisted dying, assisted suicide and euthanasia.
“This conversation will explain what Dignity in Dying are campaigning for and will feature a distinguished panel of guests drawn from the fields of medicine, religion, politics disability and law, including
“The event is for all people, whether they are in favour of, opposed to, or still undecided about an assisted dying law.”
Places are limited, so entry is by ticket only (free of charge), via Eventbrite here: https://shorturl.at/nKOSU
Mrs Fenton, whose husband had been battling the incurable neuro-degenerative Huntington’s Disease, said: “I’ve been campaigning for a change in the law since 2017 when Keith ended his life at Dignitas in Switzerland.
“Whilst we were in Switzerland, we would remind Keith that we had a return ticket for him and he could come home if he wanted to.
“He would always say that it was the right decision for him but it was wrong he had to come to Switzerland.
“I promised Keith that I would join the campaign once I got home and I have led the West Berkshire Dignity in Dying group since.
“This really is an exciting time to be part of the campaign as it now feels like it is a matter of ‘when’ not ‘if’ the law will be changed!
Doors open at 6.30pm, discussion starts at 7pm.
