Former Beenham man pleads not guilty to 1966 murder
On Sunday, October 30, 1966 the near naked body of 17-year-old Yolande Waddington who had lived in Beenham for just five days, was found yards from a barn at Hall Place Farm in Beenham.
She had been strangled.
Mr Burgess appeared by video link at Reading Crown Court at a pre-trial hearing today (Friday) and entered his plea of not guilty to High Court judge Justice Andrew Nicol, who will preside at the trial, which is set to begin on June 13 at the same court and last for six weeks.
Mr Burgess wore a brown sweater, glasses, and spoke only to confirm his name and enter the plea.
Today’s hearing had originally been expected to take place in Cambridge but due to complications it was moved to Reading.
Miss Waddington was a former pupil at St Gabriel's School who previously lived in Newbury and disappeared on Friday, October 28, 1966.
In November, sparking national media attention, Thames Valley Police arrested 64-year-old David Burgess, formerly of Beenham, and charged him with her murder.
