Former head of Baughurst school guest of honour at prizegiving

More than 40 awards presented

THE FORMER headteacher of a Baughurst secondary school returned as guest of honour at the school’s annual prizegiving ceremony last Thursday evening.

More than 40 pupils picked up awards at The Hurst Community College’s annual prizegiving celebration, held at the school in Brimpton Road.

The former Year 11 pupils were recognised for their sporting and academic achievements, with prizes sponsored by local individuals and organisations, including The Loddon Valley Lions, AWE, Tadley Town Council, Baughurst Parish Council and Tadley Chamber of Trade.

Headteacher Roger Jones began the evening with a review of the year group’s successes.

Of the 240 pupils in the year group, a total 93 per cent had achieved A* to C grades in GCSE English language, contributing to a total 69 per cent gaining five or more GCSEs at A* to C including English and mathematics.

He also praised the pupils for their role as key ambassadors for the school when Ofsted visited last May and graded it as ‘good’.

Former head girl Rebecca Halil then reflected on the year at the school, emphasising how strongly she felt they had benefited from the sense of community at The Hurst.

Prizes were awarded by former headteacher, Malcolm Christian, who retired at the same time as the year group left in the summer.

In his address, Mr Christian reflected on the significant changes within education that have happened in a relatively short space of time, and reiterated how important hard-work and good people-skills are for success in later life.

Mr Jones said the evening proved a fitting celebration of the achievements of a wonderful set of young people.

“I’m particularly delighted that Mr Christian could join us as the year group always had enormous respect for him,” said Mr Jones.

Among the many prizes awarded by Mr Christian were: Loddon Valley Lions Sports Personality of the Year – James Beeks; Football Player of the Year – Nathan Dow; David Evans Rugby Player of the Year – Gabriel Glynn; Netball Player of the Year – Jade Smith; Richard Howison-Johnstone Prize for Effort in PE – Imogen Treadgold.

The Glyn Bond Technology Cup (Engineering) went to Colin Oram and Childcare Prize to Sophie Jones.

The Excellence in Mathematics prize was awarded to Greg Shaw and The Gwen Richards English Language Trophy to Rebecca Halil.

Olivia Johnson scooped the Governors’ Prize for Excellence and the Bob O’Bee Memorial Cup went to Ewan Cliffe.

The Gilbert Cup for Music went to Paige Sankey and Performing Arts Award to Owen Chengun and James Hardy.
