Former Newbury IT expert Brian Brayley amassed more than 2,000 indecent images of children aged two years and up

A PAEDOPHILE pensioner amassed more than 2,000 indecent images of children, some as young as two years old.

The hoard included videos depicting very young children being raped.

In the dock for sentencing at Reading Crown Court on Thursday, October 3, was former IT consultant Brian Brayley.

At a previous hearing the 77-year-old, of Old Newtown Road, Newbury, admitted having 744 images of children in Category A.

This is the most serious category depicting penetrative sex, bestiality or sadism.

He further admitted having 623 indecent images of children in Category B.

Next, Brayley admitted having 538 Category C indecent images of children.

Finally, he admitted having 399 prohibited images of children.

All the above offences were committed in Newbury between September 13, 2002, and August 4 last year.

Joel Reynolds, prosecuting, said the extreme youth of the victims, the acts depicted and the 20-year period of offending were all aggravating features.

The court heard that, despite his initial admissions to police, Brayley had subsequently sought to deny his offending to a probation officer.

And, despite telling his children otherwise, he had made few follow-ups on promises to seek treatment, said Judge Heather Nott.

Barrister Kate Chidgey, defending, said her client had sought to walk back his initial admissions because he was nervous, and insisted Brayley had made efforts to engage with treatment.

She added: “He found himself, in my submission, in a worsening pornography addiction which progressed into these types of images.”

Nevertheless, she told the court, “his relationship with his children is perhaps even stronger now than it was before as they continue to support him through this”.

Referring to his denials in the pre-sentence report (PSR) and his prospect of rehabilitation, Ms Chidgey said: “There’s clearly more work to do, given what he said to probation in the PSR.

“However, in my submission, he can be managed in the community.”

Judge Nott told Braley: “This is a sad day for you, to lose your good character at the age of 77.

“There was a vast amount of photographs of children as young as two, going up to ages 12 and 13.

“I will take your denials to the writer of the PSR as a blip, due to your concern about today’s sentencing exercise.”

Judge Nott pointed out she was largely bound by sentencing guidelines.

These stipulate that a suspended sentence should be looked on favourably where there is a realistic prospect of rehabilitation.

Brayley was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, suspended for two years.

He was fined £5,000 with £150 costs and ordered to complete up to 30 days of rehablitation activity.

Finally, Brayley was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders register and made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for 10 years.
