Former mayor's Golden Wedding bash

Party raises funds for stroke charity

CONGRATULATIONS are due to former Hungerford mayor Chris Jennings and husband Mick.

The couple have celebrated 50 years of marriage with a golden wedding party.

They got married at Holy Trinity Church in Fareham, Surrey, on August 7, 1965, and celebrated with a special party for family and friends at the Elcot Park Hotel.

But, instead of bringing gifts, the pair invited guests to make a donation to West Berkshire Speakbality, of which Mrs Jennings is chairwoman.

It is a charity close to her heart because in March 2011 she suffered two devastating strokes which left her paralysed down her left side and almost unable to speak.

Since then she has battled back to health, while raising more than £1,600 for Stroke Care for Newbury and West Berkshire by walking the length of Northbrook Street in Newbury in 2012, and with a charity big band concert.

Mrs Jennings, who was mayor of Hungerford in 2000, said she met her husband-to-be in 1962 when he was working as a cobbler and she took some shoes to be mended.

She said: “He asked me to the pictures and that was it – we’ve been together ever since.”

The pair, who live in Priory Road, have two daughters and five grandchildren.
