Former Sheriff talks to University of Third Age in Newbury

Speen villagers provided informative talk at the group's January meeting

A TALK by a former Sheriff of the Old Bailey was a highlight at the January meeting of the Newbury branch of the University of the Third Age (U3A).

Guest speakers at the branch's January meeting were Speen villagers the former Sheriff John Hughesdon and Sheriff's Lady, Mavis Hughesdon.

Mr Hughesdon spoke of his time at the Old Bailey and his term as an Alderman, representing the ward of Smithfield - positions both held in the City of London.

He covered many aspects of his responsibilities including duties as aide to the Lord Mayor during his year in office.

Mrs Hughesdon shared her experiences as Sheriff's Lady, assisting the Lady Mayor, and many items of memorabilia and regalia were on display.

A vote of thanks was given by U3A chairwoman, Mary Blake, for what she said was a most captivating and informative presentation.

All are welcome to attend the branch's next meeting on Monday, February 6, at 10.30am, at St Nicolas church hall. There will be a small charge for refreshments. For more information about the branch visit www.newburyu3a.org.uk or for membership enquiries, telephone (01635) 524099.

A national organisation, the U3A is a learning cooperative of people no longer in full time employment, whose members share educational, creative and leisure activities. No qualifications are required and none are given.
