A FORMER pupil at Kennet School in Thatcham has been jailed for a savage assault.

Laurie Alan Ilott was also convicted of possessing a baseball bat as an offensive weapon.

The 36-year-old, of Enborne Way, Brimpton, had denied assaulting Brett Card by beating him in Reading on November 9 last year.

He also denied possessing the baseball bat in public on the same occasion.

But Mr Ilott was convicted of both offences following a trial.

At Reading Magistrates' Court on Friday, November 11, he was sent to prison for 26 weeks.

Magistrates said the prison term was necessary because of the serious nature of the attack on Mr Card.

Mr Ilott was also ordered to pay a statutory victim services surcharge of £128 on his release.
