Communities gather for fourth charity cricket match in Newbury

A community organisation committed to bringing ethnically diverse communities together held its fourth charity cricket match on Sunday.

Twelve teams played at Community United’s cricket event at Falkland Cricket Club, compared with six teams when the volunteer-run project started in 2021.

Many families and organisations turned out for an enjoyable day of sport, with a healthy dose of competition, including Mayor of Newbury, Andy Moore, and Berkshure Youth, which had the youngest team.

“It was amazing and such a lovely day,” said Alice Kunjappy-Clifton, CEO of Community United.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better day. The whole community came together, and everyone played amazingly.

“We want to keep the community coming together. We want more families to take part.

“All of them want to come back next year.”

The Newbury Indian community took the trophy this year from last year’s winners, Thames Valley Police, which had returned to defend its title.

The teams which took part were the West Berks Muslim Centre, the Indian community, Project Salama, Time to Talk, the Alliance for Cohesion and Racial Equality, Newbury Town Council, Fink Street Food, the Bradfield Ladies team and Berkshire Youth.

And the Royal Berkshire Foundation Trust was on hand offering free health checks.
