Dementia UK is holding three free day-long advice clinics at the Nationwide Building Society branch in Northbrook Street, Newbury, on July 8, 9 and 10

Dementia UK is holding three free day-long advice clinics in Newbury next week, writes George Cummings.

They will be at the Nationwide Building Society branch at 75 Northbrook Street on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Ruby Guild, an Admiral Nurse at Dementia UK, said: “We’re looking forward to returning to Berkshire.

“Nationwide branches offer a safe and private space for people to access specialist support for dementia, and the Fairer Futures partnership is helping us bring face-to-face support to people in a familiar location.”

The Admiral Nurses have also given three recommendations on how to approach someone who is showing signs of dementia.

First, do not become complacent. If someone suddenly becomes upset with themselves, it can be a good opportunity to have an honest conversation about the symptoms they are facing and offer support.

Second, explain that symptoms of dementia are often shared by other conditions. Simply going to seek advice from a GP is much less daunting than expecting a dementia diagnosis after a check-up.

Finally, be as supportive as possible, both through attending appointments if wanted and helping to keep a symptom diary.

Hosted by Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurses, the clinics are open to anyone impacted by dementia who books an appointment online on Dementia UK’s website: https://www.dementiauk.org/information-and-support/how-we-can-support-you/admiral-nurse-clinics/nationwide/?misc=media

As well as dealing with dementia itself, these clinics will offer advice on complicated situations that can arise from dementia, such as legal or financial issues.

Appointments are in-person and completely confidential.

In December 2024 the Government announced that 483,000 people living in England alone have dementia – a record high.
