Fun and frolics had by all in the Newbury pancake race 2014

This year, 18 teams from local businesses, organisations and charities took to the course while crowds of local residents lined the streets to cheer on the competitors.
Getting the event off to a good start was the team from Anytime Fitness, Newbury, who won the first race, and later scooped themselves a place in the final.
The group could be heard whooping and cheering at the finish line, and later general manager Emma Griggs said: “I’m ecstatic, all the teams did very well, it was a good laugh.”

However, they weren’t quite quick enough as stealing the crown for Pancake Champions 2014 award, sponsored by the Newbury Weekly News, was the team from accountancy firm Ross Brooke (pictured, second, with Newbury News managing director James Gurney).
They also beat teams from Swings & Smiles, Gardner Leader and Northcroft Leisure (pictured, third) for the title in the final race.
Meanwhile, Ben Saunders from law firm Thomas Eggar impressed judges with his flipping skills at the dedicated tossing points on the track, and was named as Pancake Tosser of the Year.
“It’s a huge honour,” he told the Newbury Weekly News team at the event. “I’m definitely going to be back next year to defend my trophy.”
Scooping best dressed was the team from Shaw hairdressers L. K. Hair.
Organiser from the Soroptimist International of Newbury & District branch, Katy Hawthorne, said: “It’s fantastic, I’m delighted with the effort that people have made to run in fancy dress.
“It’s just a great community event.
“It’s lovely to have a good crowd to urge on the runners.”
